To be sure, happiness is one of our most enjoyable emotional
experiences. So much so that many of us fantasize about it being
the state we're in all the time. It is experienced in the form of joy,
interest, love. We think of other words such as satisfaction,
contentment, peace, security, fun, excitement, kindness, pride...
It is not our only emotional experience however, and to expect that it
will be is to set ourselves up for disappointment. To expect that we
will be happy all the time is to set conditions on our self worth.
Our other emotions are also a part of who we are.
Our goal is to become emotionally agile. To let our emotions come,
serve their purpose, and then to let them go.
Painful emotions are not so bad if we know that they will pass.
Happy emotions are not so good if we must also live in fear of their
passing.
Greater emotional agility allows us a fuller range of experience of
who we are as individuals and as human beings. It allows us to be
less fearful and fragile. This empowerment is experienced by many
as an underlying happiness which remains in some form even when
the fleeting feeling doesn't feel so good.
